A workshop, not a dealership
You get Justin, and you get a straight answer.
An independent workshop means the person who looks at your vehicle is the person who works on it, and the person who tells you what it needs. No service adviser in the middle, no upsell sheet, no waiting a fortnight for a diagnostic booking.
Land Rovers reward that. They are specific vehicles with specific weak points, and knowing where those are is the difference between a job that takes an afternoon and a job that takes three visits. Twenty plus years of only ever looking at these things is the whole point.
Work is quoted first, done in the time quoted, and explained afterwards in words that mean something. Customers keep writing that down in reviews, which is about as good a reference as a workshop gets.

It says so on the back of the ute, and it is meant literally. The Land Rover work is the specialty and it is what people travel for, but the workshop is a full mechanical workshop and always has been. Bring the Discovery. Bring the wife's hatchback at the same time.
The trading name says the same thing: Independent Mechanical Services, with the Land Rover specialty sitting inside it rather than instead of it.

Finding the fault, not the easiest part to replace.
Most of what goes wrong on a modern Land Rover is not where the warning light says it is. A stretched timing chain, a transfer case starting to complain, an inlet tract choked with carbon: they all announce themselves in ways that are easy to misread if you have not seen a hundred of them.
That is really what the specialty buys you. Less time on the hoist while somebody works it out, fewer parts fitted on the way to the answer, and a straight account of what is worth doing now against what can wait.
Where a job is going to be expensive, you get told before it starts, not after.

Justin Cooper has been repairing Land Rovers as an independent specialist since 2002, and has run the Browns Road workshop in Kingston under the IMS name for years. It is a small operation on purpose. You speak to the person doing the work.
Reputation here has been built the slow way. People find the workshop because another Land Rover owner told them to, which is worth more than any advertising and is exactly what the reviews describe: one customer was sent here by the Land Rover community, another on the recommendation of the person who sold them the car.
The workshop is on Browns Road in Kingston, twelve kilometres south of Hobart, and is open Monday to Friday from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon. Early enough to drop a car before work, and easy to get to from anywhere in the Channel or the city.
